1917 Patterson Apartments

This is a very pretty 104 year old Apartment Building, erected in 1917 at the corner of North Mesa and California Streets. Completed in August, it was the vision of Mrs. Mildred Patterson, an El Paso socialite and most famous in period newspapers as being an active member of Trinity Methodist Church. She was also heavily involved in real estate transactions, according numerous references to her wheeling-and-dealing in period newspapers.

The Patterson, a Romanesque flavored 5 story Commercial design, was designed by established El Paso Architect H.M. Beutell and built by iconic El Paso Contractor R.E. McKee. Beutell is well known for his signature design, the 1920 Crockett Elementary (please see https://www.facebook.com/TrostSociety/posts/3241221995995844)along with several other local buildings, including the fascinating Marguerite Apartments (https://www.facebook.com/TrostSociety/posts/3054712194646826).

The building was erected in less than a year at a cost of $55,000, which was a $5,000 overrun.

Today the exterior is in great shape, and the building was a joy to photograph. Of course, it's over a century old and is not a cupcake - but it's not bad either. The building recently experienced an interior renovation and is currently accepting applications. It's a building easy to drive by, but once you notice it - you stare. We stare.
