Here is an imposing Thorman designed Spanish home, built for El Paso Physician and investor Dr. J.W. Cathcart and completed late 1929 or early 1930. The home is located at 1515 Hardaway in the Austin Terrace area. The building permit was issued to Cathcart on the 9th of July, 1929, and was erected at a cost of $15,000. (Zillow lists the property today for nearly half a mil!) The building permit detailed a two-story brick, however today it is beautifully stuccoed - we're unclear whether the stucco-over-brick was original, or the result of a remodel.
Dr. Cathcart was known not only as a Physician, but also as an investor in properties. The Spanish-designed single-story building on the northwest corner of Mills and Kansas in downtown El Paso bears his name (the Cathcart Building), also designed by Thorman. (For our article detailing the history of the Cathcart Building, please see https://www.facebook.com/TrostSociety/posts/3431591903625518)
The Cathcarts remained in the home until 1945, when it was sold to William Roche; then in 1949 - 1953 it was owned by John Edgar Webb. In November 1953, Webb sold it to its most famous owners, Richard N and former El Paso Mayor Suzanne Azar. The Azars remained in the home until at least 1984, when its history disappears from newspapers.
The home today is in outstanding condition, and was a joy to photograph recently.
Did you know Richard Azar, and his passion for flying, is credited by many to be the inspiration for the Amigo Airsho? True!
