Although I have been unable to find documentary evidence identifying the original architect for this 1902 structure, in 1928 it was purchased by Charles Bassett and remodeled by Trost & Trost. It was the Flagship property in Bassett's new Hotel chain, which included the Hidalgo in Lordsburg, NM, La Caverna in Carlsbad, NM, the Hotel Paisano in Marfa, and the Hotel El Capitan in Van Horn, TX.
The structure, located at the corner of Stanton and San Antonio in downtown El Paso and still bearing the "Gateway Hotel" sign on its roof, has recently been renovated.
The building comes with a sordid history. For an interesting narrative about some of its melodramatic past, excellently written, visit "The Curious History Of The Gateway Hotel" at Fusion Magazin here: http://thefusionmag.com/the-curious-history-of-the-gateway-hotel/ . The author, Crysti Couture, is one of my favorite sources and her narrative is delightful.
